Name of the Course:  ནང་པའི་ཆོས་ཀྱི་གཞི་རྩའི་གནད་དོན་ཁག་ངོ་སྤྲོད།  Introduction to Buddhism: Exploring Essential Buddhist Topics

Age group: Youth (high school) & Young Adults

Day & Date: Every Thursday; April 16 – June 11, 2026                                

Time: 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm

Location: Tibetan Canadian Cultural Centre, 40 Titan Road, Etobicoke

Course Fee: $50 for materials & stationery ($5 per class)

Course Instructor: Geshe Kalsang Damdul

Medium of Instruction: English & Tibetan

Course Coordinator and Assistant: Tsering Dhundup, OCT

  1. Course Description

Prerequisite: None

This course is designed for Tibetan youth (high school youth) and young adults in the Greater Toronto Area, interested in learning the basic teachings and practices of Buddhism. In each topic of the course, the teacher will explore with the students how to apply these basic teachings and practices in their daily life to become more compassionate and loving towards themselves and others –the basis of overall well-being. Moreover, many of our daily problems arise from confused states of mind. As such, students will study methods and tools to cultivate inner values and enhance the wisdom of understanding reality to overcome deluded mental states.

Week 1 April 16, 2026 Orientation & The Foundation: Course goals, and the transformative life of Buddha Shakyamuni.
Week 2 April 23, 2026 The Core Pillars: Exploring the Triple Gem (Refuge) and the Four Noble Truths.
Week 3 April 30, 2026 The Nature of Existence: Finding meaning through the lens of life and impermanence.
Week 4 May 7, 2026 The Law of Interdependence: Karma (Cause & Effect) and the Twelve Links of Dependent Origination.
Week 5 May 14, 2026 Ethical Excellence: Living a responsible life through the practice of the Ten Virtues.
Week 6 May 21, 2026 The Science of Mind: Cultivating focus and awareness (featuring insights from Dr. Richard Davidson).
Week 7 May 28, 2026 Emotional Intelligence: Practical tools for calming the mind and transforming anger and hatred.
Week 8 June 4, 2026 The Heart of Compassion: Avalokiteshvara, the Mani Mantra, and applying kindness in daily life.
Week 9 June 11, 2026 The Light of Wisdom: Manjushri, the Wisdom Mantra, and deepening our understanding of reality.

Integration & Reflection: Closing ceremony, community discussion, and certificate presentation.

  1. Instructional Methods: 

  • The daily class will include lectures, discussions, group work, and presentations. And a Question & Answer session at the end of each class.
  • A 15-minute guided focus/awareness meditation at the beginning of every session.
